Can bamboo be laid directly to joists?
No, most bamboo boards are manufactured at 14mm thickness. Whilst bamboo is quite dense (especially strand woven), you need at least 18-19mm for structural support. It is best to lay a structural particle board or similar and lay over that.
Can bamboo be refinished?
Yes. Most bamboo can be sanded and recoated up to 4-5 times depending on the wear and tear over time.
Are the boards end matched?
How do I know if I am buying quality bamboo flooring?
Generally it is hard to tell just by looking at the product. As with most things, if the price sounds cheap than the product usually is!
What is cupping?
Cupping is when the boards turn up at the edges creating a cupping effect. This can be caused by a number of things:
- Incorrect installation (not enough expansion )
- Inferior quality (too much moisture content at time of manufacturing)
- Too much moisture in the sub floor
- Very High humidity or extreme changes in air temperature
- Not enough ventilation to the area
These things are not confined to bamboo but can and do affect most timbers. In most instances cupping can be remedied by sanding and recoating.
What is the difference between solid tongue and groove and easi-lock ?
Tongue and groove is designed for a permanent installation such as gluing to the subfloor. Easi-lock is for those want to carry out installation themselves, with more ease than gluing.
Will floating the bamboo make it sound hollow ?
Because our strand woven bamboo flooring is so dense and we recommend you always use a acoustic underlay, there's really not much difference between gluing the boards as apposed to floating them. The end result is a quiet floor which offers comfort.
Will Bamboo Mark?
Yes. You should always try and protect your floor by putting felt pads on the bottom of chairs, tables and any other items that may be moved frequently across your floor.
Under normal conditions the surface should last up to 10 years before it needs refinishing in a domestic installation.
Whilst Bamboo flooring is very hard, like any good timber it is not bullet proof and needs to be maintained. If so it will last a life time!
